SJK(C) Chung Hua Tondong Contract Signing Boosts Inclusive Education

SJK(C) Chung Hua Tondong Contract Signing Boosts Inclusive Education

TONDONG: The official exchange of contract documents for SJK(C) Chung Hua Tondong’s Phase 1 classroom block construction marks a significant step not only in expanding the school’s infrastructure but also in reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to inclusive education and nation-building.

Founded in 1936, SJK(C) Chung Hua Tondong currently educates 122 students, comprising 67 Chinese and 55 Bumiputera pupils — a living testament to Sarawak’s multiracial harmony.

Phase 1 of the project involves the construction of a new classroom block worth RM8 million, while Phase 2, which includes drainage and parking infrastructure, will bring the total development cost to over RM14 million.

This project is especially historic as it is the first Chinese school in Sarawak where the Sarawak Government invoked Section 48 of the Land Code to facilitate the acquisition of 1.94 acres of adjacent land — a necessary step following the partial loss of school land due to the Pan Borneo Highway project.

The development reflects a collaborative Sarawakian spirit, with funds and support from multiple parties:

  • RM1 million in earthworks contributed by the Pan Borneo contractor
  • RM2.55 million from the Sarawak Government’s annual SJKC financial grant
  • RM2 million from the Federal Government

“The Government of Sarawak has pledged another RM2 million from the 2025 SJKC financial grant to support this project,” said officials during the ceremony.

With Phase 1 scheduled for completion by July 2026, the project underscores a legacy of cooperation and mutual respect across all races.

The school and stakeholders are appealing for public donations to complete the initiative and preserve this vital cultural and educational institution for future generations.
