Church Break-In Shocks Miri: 5 Men Arrested, Stolen Items Recovered

MIRI, 16 April 2025 Police in Miri have arrested five local men suspected of being involved in a break-in at a church in the city, bringing some relief to the local community after weeks of anxiety.

The arrests were made following a coordinated police operation at several locations around Taman Tunku and Bekenu. According to the police, the suspects were taken into custody based on information linked to a reported church burglary that occurred in March this year.

Local residents had expressed concern over the safety of places of worship, especially after news of the break-in surfaced. Police acted swiftly and tracked down the suspects using evidence gathered from the crime scene.

During the arrest operation, police successfully recovered several items believed to have been stolen from the church. These included musical instruments that are used during church services. In addition, a saloon car believed to have been used in the commission of the crime was also seized.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which pertains to breaking and entering. If convicted, the suspects could face up to five years in jail, and possibly more depending on the extent of the theft.

Police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests as investigations are still ongoing.

Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially near places of worship or schools. The police also reminded citizens to strengthen security measures around community facilities to deter such crimes in the future.
