KUCHING – More Sarawak villages are being encouraged to organise Community Empowerment Programmes (PMK) more regularly, as leaders see these initiatives as vital in strengthening unity and promoting cooperation among residents.
Dato Ir Lo Khere Chiang, Batu Kitang State Assemblyman (ADUN), said PMK is not merely a slogan, but a continuous effort aimed at developing self-reliant communities with a healthy competitive mindset and a strong spirit of cooperation.
“Through this programme, residents can better understand the importance of knowledge, skills, entrepreneurship and social welfare in building a more prosperous society,” he said.
He emphasised that the active involvement of all segments of society, including youth, women, senior citizens and local leaders, is crucial in shaping villages that are progressive, harmonious and united.
According to him, a village’s true success goes beyond physical infrastructure and lies in the strength of relationships and the sense of togetherness among its people.
He made these remarks at the closing ceremony of the Kampung Haji Baki Community Empowerment Programme held at the Haji Baki Community Hall. The speech was delivered on his behalf by Padawan Municipal Councillor Gerald Goh.
Among those present were Kuching District Officer Zaidi Sarkawi, village head Haji Baki Sabtuyah Yusof, and tribal heads Harzmi Abdul Rani, Baslie Sulaiman and Rosli Ahmad Darus, reflecting the importance of strong community leadership in driving empowerment initiatives.
Dato Lo added that the goals of PMK should involve villagers of all age groups. He noted that consistent application of these values could spark further positive initiatives and inspire communities to undertake more meaningful and impactful projects.
Community empowerment programmes are increasingly recognised as effective platforms for nurturing inclusivity and resilience.
By encouraging knowledge-sharing, entrepreneurship and awareness of social welfare, PMK plays a key role in promoting long-term social cohesion and sustainable development in Sarawak.
Observers also point out that such initiatives align with the state’s broader vision of advancing community-driven development, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
With active participation from both leaders and residents, PMK is expected to continue transforming Sarawak’s villages into strong examples of unity and cooperation.
