Sarawak Pushes CPR Training, Mental Health Awareness for Safer Society

KUCHING — Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and wider use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are increasingly vital as heart disease cases and mental health challenges rise in modern society, according to Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian.

Dr. Sim, who also serves as the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, emphasised that CPR knowledge and AED readiness can make the difference between life and death in emergencies.

He also pointed out that the pace of modern living has intensified mental health concerns, with many individuals struggling with isolation and limited access to emotional support.

“Mental wellbeing is extremely important and will become even more significant as lifestyles continue to accelerate. Many people feel lonely because they have no outlet to share their struggles,” he said.

He made the remarks on Sunday while officiating the Mental Health and Lifesaving Skills Training Programme, themed “Mind, Heart & Hands: Empowering Wellness, Saving Lives.”

The initiative, attended by more than 120 participants, combined a mental health awareness seminar with practical CPR and AED training delivered by certified trainers from the Malaysian Red Crescent.

Dr. Sim underscored the need for holistic wellbeing that integrates both mental and physical health. He commended Sarawak’s youth volunteers for their contribution to shaping a more compassionate and emergency-ready community.

“There are many things that involve both the mind and the heart, and they must go hand in hand. More importantly, we are here because of our love and care for Sarawak. This effort is part of building the Sarawak nation,” he added.

Organisers noted that the programme not only strengthens community preparedness for medical emergencies but also empowers young Sarawakians with resilience, empathy, and practical life-saving skills. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to cultivate a healthier, more caring society in the state.
