Two tour bus drivers found without licences within first hour of crackdown
In a swift and rigorous enforcement operation launched by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), two tour buses were seized within the initial hour after their drivers were discovered to be operating without valid licences. This crackdown, part of a broader initiative targeting tour bus safety and regulatory compliance, underscores growing concerns over public safety amidst recent accidents.
Under the directive of Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the JPJ, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, embarked on a comprehensive crackdown on tour bus operators across Malaysia. This initiative follows a tragic incident involving a tour bus that resulted in fatalities, raising alarms over lapses in regulatory adherence within the industry.
Senior Enforcement Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan confirmed that as of 9.30am on Tuesday, enforcement officers had halted two tour buses after uncovering drivers without valid licences. Prompt action was taken to ensure passenger safety, with summonses issued to the respective companies and replacements sought for the errant drivers.
The intensified operation, involving over 70 officers from JPJ, police, AADK, and tourism ministries, aims to curb negligent practices and enhance safety standards in the tour bus sector. This follows revelations that a tour bus driver tested positive for drugs, highlighting broader issues of compliance and safety within the industry.
The recent incident on Genting Highlands, where a bus carrying tourists overturned, claiming lives due to driver negligence and operational violations, has catalyzed government action. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has directed stringent penalties, including potential suspension and revocation of operating licences for non-compliant operators.
