KUCHING – The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public Service (CUEPACS) continues to play a pivotal role in championing the welfare and rights of civil servants across Malaysia, while also serving as a strategic partner to the government in implementing development policies.
Speaking at the MADANI CUEPACS Appreciation Dinner 2025 on Thursday, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Office (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, praised the organisation’s contributions in safeguarding the interests of government employees.
“CUEPACS is a major partner of the government in creating efficient, integrity-driven and people-centric public services.
We remember the services of state and federal CUEPACS leaders who have never hesitated to defend the rights and welfare of government employees,” he said.
In recognition of its efforts, Datuk Gerawat announced an allocation of RM30,000 for 2026 to support CUEPACS Sarawak’s activities and programmes.
He noted that the funding symbolised the state government’s appreciation of the union’s role in strengthening ties between civil servants and the administration.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted the amendments to the Sarawak Labour Ordinance, which came into effect in May this year.
He explained that the changes were designed to ensure that workers’ rights are better protected while balancing the interests of employers.
“This change not only ensures that the rights of workers are protected, but also aligns the rights of workers and employers. It increases investor confidence in a modern and fair labour system in Sarawak,” he said.
The appreciation dinner was held to honour CUEPACS’ services in fostering unity within the public sector and reinforcing the relationship between government employees and the state.
Also present at the event were CUEPACS President Dato’ Dr Adnan Mat, CUEPACS Sarawak Chairman Kullin Djayang, and other distinguished guests.
CUEPACS, established in 1957, represents over 1.2 million civil servants nationwide. The union has consistently advocated for better working conditions, fair wages, and improved welfare benefits, while also engaging with the government to ensure that reforms in the public service sector are implemented effectively.
In Sarawak, CUEPACS has been actively involved in consultations on labour policies, welfare schemes, and training initiatives aimed at enhancing the professionalism and well-being of civil servants.
The recognition given at the MADANI Appreciation Dinner reflects the state’s acknowledgement of the union’s enduring role as a bridge between civil servants and the government.
