MIRI – Curtin University Malaysia and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) have once again joined forces in support of the Sarawak Government’s initiative to plant 35 million trees by 2025, reinforcing their shared commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation.
A Tree Planting Ceremony was held at the Curtin Malaysia campus on Friday, in conjunction with the “Greening Sarawak Together” campaign under the broader Tree Planting, Habitat Protection and Rehabilitation Campaign 2021–2030.
The initiative aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13 (Climate Action) and Goal 15 (Life on Land), which focus on urgent environmental measures and biodiversity preservation.
Curtin Malaysia’s Chief Operations Officer Sharon Chong said the university remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainability through academic research, green campus operations, and public engagement.
“We are extremely honoured to collaborate with Sarawak Energy in this meaningful initiative. Planting trees is not merely a symbolic act—it represents a lasting impact on the environment and demonstrates our shared sense of responsibility for future generations,” she said.
Michael Wong, Senior Manager for Strategy, Architecture and Innovation at SEB, shared that the campaign is part of SEB’s broader effort to support Sarawak’s green transformation.
“Sarawak Energy, alongside community partners like Curtin Malaysia, is committed to planting and protecting 500,000 trees by 2030. As of December 2024, we have already planted over 188,000 trees across the state,” Wong noted.
During the event, 117 volunteers successfully planted 100 trees around the Curtin campus, serving both as a symbolic and practical step towards a greener, more resilient future for Sarawak.
This collaboration highlights the growing synergy between academia, industry, and government in addressing global climate challenges at the local level, while fostering environmental stewardship among Sarawak’s youth and communities.
