DALAT – A joint operation to reduce the crocodile population in Sungai Batang Oya has been successfully completed by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), in collaboration with the Dalat District Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).
The operation, which ran from 20 April to 2 May 2026, was carried out as a precautionary measure to safeguard communities living near the river. Authorities confirmed that two male crocodiles were captured during the exercise.
The first specimen measured 14 feet in length and weighed approximately 300 kilograms, while the second was 9 feet long and weighed about 150 kilograms.
Officials explained that the initiative was part of ongoing efforts to manage wildlife populations in areas where human activity and crocodile habitats overlap.
Sungai Batang Oya has long been identified as a location where crocodile encounters pose risks to residents, particularly those who rely on the river for fishing, transport, and daily activities.
The collaboration between SFC, APM Dalat, and PDRM demonstrates the importance of inter-agency coordination in addressing public safety concerns.
By combining expertise in wildlife management, emergency response, and law enforcement, the operation was conducted efficiently and without incident.
Local communities have expressed relief following the removal of the crocodiles, noting that such measures help reduce anxiety among residents who depend on the river.
Authorities emphasised that while crocodiles are a natural part of Sarawak’s ecosystem, population control is sometimes necessary to prevent accidents and protect lives.
The Sarawak Forestry Corporation continues to monitor crocodile populations across the state, working closely with district-level agencies to ensure that interventions are carried out responsibly.
Officials highlighted that the captured crocodiles were handled in accordance with established procedures, ensuring both public safety and compliance with conservation guidelines.
