DARO – The long-awaited Daro Riverbank Development Project has officially commenced, with plans to transform the area into a vibrant community living space that integrates social, recreational and well-being needs for residents of all ages.
Daro State Assemblyman Dr. Safiee Ahmad said the project is designed to stand apart from other waterfront developments in Sarawak by focusing on inclusivity.
Facilities will cater for youth, children and the elderly, ensuring that the riverbank becomes a shared space for the entire community.
“We are aware that other waterfronts also have similar facilities, but the waterfront in Daro is unique because its components take into account the needs of the community of various ages,” Dr. Safiee explained after officiating the Prayer Ceremony for the start of work at the project site on Friday.
The project, which has been in planning for several years, finally moved forward after a re-tendering process.
Construction officially began on 21 November 2025 and is expected to take 24 months, with completion scheduled for 20 November 2027.
Dr. Safiee acknowledged that the development may cause minor disruptions to daily activities due to its location along a main route.
However, he stressed that the long-term benefits will outweigh short-term inconveniences, as the riverbank is set to improve quality of life and provide new recreational opportunities for residents.
He emphasised the importance of cooperation between the community, contractors, consultants and implementing agencies to ensure the project is delivered on time and according to specifications.
“This project is not just a waterfront but also a new recreational place that can meet a need of our community, especially in Daro,” he said.
The riverbank development is expected to complement existing and future projects, helping to establish Daro as a community-friendly town with a strong focus on well-being.
It is envisioned as a landmark that will enhance the town’s identity and provide a hub for social interaction.
The ceremony was attended by key officials, including Ir. Ts. Faizal Suki, Principal Assistant Director of the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Zul Usup, Daro District Officer, DSP Rahim Mihos, Matu Daro District Police Chief, and Pemanca Lau Oi Phen, alongside representatives from project consultants and contractors.
The Daro Riverbank Project reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, ensuring that infrastructure not only meets physical needs but also strengthens community bonds and supports social well-being.
