KOTA SAMARAHAN – The welfare of flood victims remains a central focus for the government, as Datuk Rubiah Wang, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Member of Parliament for Kota Samarahan, continued her inspection of Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in Kota Samarahan and Serian Division.
Her visit began at Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan PPS, which had previously sheltered 13 victims from three families of Kampung Plaie. Following improving weather conditions, the centre was officially closed at 1 pm, allowing residents to return home and begin cleaning efforts.
Datuk Rubiah then proceeded to Dewan Lenggai Kampung Entingan PPS, which had accommodated 15 households totalling 52 victims, and Kampung Nangka City Hall PPS, which housed 12 households with 44 victims. Both centres, opened on 9 January, were closed at 1 pm after floodwaters receded and conditions were deemed safe for residents to return.
During her visits, Datuk Rubiah engaged directly with evacuees to gather feedback on their daily needs, safety concerns, and the facilities provided. She emphasised that the well-being of flood victims is always a priority, urging agencies to ensure continuous support to ease the burden of affected families.
Her inspection later extended to Serian Division, where she visited Dewan Sri Tok Nan Kampung Seniawan Jepon PPS, currently housing 64 victims from 20 households, and Dewan Kampung Rimba Padi PPS, which sheltered 142 victims from 42 households. The latter was among the centres with the highest number of evacuees in the division.
Datuk Rubiah noted that the flood situation across several areas is now under control, with water levels gradually receding. She added that Dewan Sri Tok Nan PPS may be closed soon if conditions continue to stabilise.
However, she cautioned residents to remain vigilant, particularly in light of reports of crocodile sightings in flood-affected areas. “Safety must always come first, and residents should remain alert to protect themselves and their families,” she said.
The visit in Serian was joined by Deputy Resident Abdul Khalid Manap and Serian District Officer Enting @ Inting Nyami, who also chairs the Serian District Disaster Management Committee. Their presence underscored the coordinated efforts between local authorities and state agencies in managing the aftermath of the floods.
Datuk Rubiah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of the people, expressing hope that flood victims will be given strength and support throughout the recovery period.
