KUCHING – The plight of flood victims in Kampung Sungai Batu has drawn the attention of the Mayor of Kuching North, Dato Haji Hilmy bin Haji Othman, who personally visited the Surau Ar Rahman Temporary Settlement Centre (PPS) to express concern and provide support.
The centre is currently sheltering 65 victims from 15 families affected by recent floods. During his visit, Dato Haji Hilmy received a briefing from security forces and took time to console evacuees, listening to their difficulties and exploring immediate solutions to ease their hardship.
Also, present was Kuching District Officer Zaidi bin Haji Sharkawi, alongside representatives from key agencies.
A total of 18 personnel from the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKM), the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) through the Sarawak State Health Department, the Civil Defence Force (APM), Sarawak RELA, and the Sungai Batu Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) have been deployed to safeguard the welfare of evacuees. Their responsibilities include ensuring safety, health, and the provision of basic necessities.
The Mayor was accompanied by Ts. Mohamad Faisal bin Adenan, Deputy Director of the DBKU Infrastructure Services Department, and Ramli bin Omar Baki, Head of DBKU Community Development and Services Division.
As part of the DBKU CARES initiative, Dato Haji Hilmy distributed essential food items to affected families, reinforcing the council’s commitment to supporting residents during emergencies.
He stressed that DBKU remains dedicated to prioritising the welfare and well-being of urban communities, particularly in times of crisis.
The visit highlighted the importance of coordinated disaster response and community solidarity in facing unpredictable weather conditions.
DBKU’s proactive involvement reflects the broader effort by local authorities to ensure that flood victims receive timely assistance and reassurance.
