KUCHING — Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) has taken a firm and meaningful stand in support of the global campaign for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed worldwide on 25 November.
As part of this annual solidarity movement, DBKU illuminated several key landmarks across the city in bright orange on Sunday night. The chosen sites — the Darul Hana Bridge, the iconic Suspension Bridge, and several surrounding areas in Kuching — were lit in the symbolic colour representing hope, safety, and a future free of violence.
The initiative, according to DBKU, is more than a symbolic gesture. It reflects the council’s long-standing commitment to safeguarding the well-being of women and girls in the community. The council stated that the orange lighting serves as a reminder to the public that every woman deserves protection, dignity, and the right to live without fear.
DBKU emphasised that violence against women remains a serious concern, not only globally but also within local communities. By joining this worldwide campaign, they aim to raise awareness and strengthen efforts to prevent all forms of abuse, whether physical, emotional, or psychological.
Residents who witnessed the stunning orange glow across Kuching expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that such public displays carry a strong message of unity and responsibility. Many also shared that the initiative encourages deeper conversations on respect, safety, and the need for continuous advocacy to protect women and girls.
DBKU urged the public to stand together in rejecting all forms of violence and to support initiatives that uplift the dignity and safety of women. The council reiterated that progress begins with awareness and collective action.
“Let us continue to send a clear message — every woman must be protected, valued, and free to live safely,” DBKU said in a statement. “Together, we can stop violence against women and honour their dignity.”
