KUCHING – Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has pledged stronger enforcement against motorists who park illegally along Jalan Hokkien, following repeated complaints from residents and road users.
The authority confirmed that vehicles left in restricted zones have been causing congestion and posing safety hazards. These actions not only disrupt traffic flow, but also inconvenience pedestrians and businesses operating in the area.
Joint monitoring with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) revealed that several vehicles were parked in prohibited sections, directly obstructing traffic movement.
Such offences fall under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Rule 16(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, which prohibit parking that results in obstruction.

DBKU Director Ramzi Abdillah, accompanied by enforcement officers, conducted a site inspection on Jalan Hokkien to assess the situation.
He emphasised that strict measures will be taken to ensure compliance with traffic laws. “We will not compromise on matters that affect public safety and traffic order,” he said during the visit.
The city hall has been actively working with police and other agencies to address traffic issues across Kuching.
Similar collaborative efforts were seen recently in Jalan Diplomatik, where DBKU introduced alternative routes during peak hours to ease congestion.
These initiatives highlight the council’s broader commitment to improving urban mobility and ensuring smoother traffic conditions.
Residents have been reminded to park only in designated areas and to respect traffic regulations. DBKU stressed that cooperation from the public is vital to maintaining order on the roads.
The council also encouraged citizens to report violations through its hotline 082-446 644 or via WhatsApp at 016-8864466.
The introduction of smart parking systems in Kuching further reflects ongoing efforts to modernise traffic management.
With new digital platforms replacing traditional coupon systems, DBKU aims to reduce misuse of parking spaces and improve monitoring efficiency.
Traffic congestion remains a pressing issue in Kuching, particularly in busy commercial districts. Authorities believe that consistent enforcement, combined with public awareness, will help reduce irresponsible parking and enhance safety for all road users.
As DBKU intensifies its crackdown on illegal parking, motorists are urged to comply with regulations to avoid penalties.
The council reiterated that its priority is to safeguard the community and ensure that Kuching’s roads remain accessible and safe.
