DBKU’s Smart Community 3R Stations Drive Recycling Success

KUCHING – Since 2025, the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has set up 14 Smart Community 3R Stations across the city to encourage residents to recycle in an organised way. The stations have already collected 26,969 kg of recyclable materials and produced RM10,788 in sales revenue.

The programme sits under DBKU’s Healthy City initiative and promotes the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) in daily life. Accessible recycling points give residents a simple way to sort and send recyclable waste. The goal centres on stronger community participation, less landfill waste, and support for a circular economy.

Five stations stood out for their strong performance, along with the managers who run them:

  • SMK Agama Tun Ahmad Zaidi Kuching – 21,757 kg
  • Satok Padang SLPAS Sports Complex – 2,027.40 kg
  • Sekolah Kebangsaan Muara Tebas – 1,187.90 kg
  • Sekolah Kebangsaan Gersik – 1,080.50 kg
  • Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Maong – 916.20 kg

DBKU praised the station managers for steady dedication and consistent effort. Their work has pushed the programme forward and encouraged others in the Kuching North community to take part.

Residents send items such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and aluminium cans to the nearest Smart Community 3R Station. Each delivery keeps waste out of landfills, saves natural resources, and supports the recycling market.

The Smart Community 3R Station project marks the first programme of its kind under DBKU’s administration. It forms part of the OKSHE 3R Waste Management Project and the Smart Waste Segregation at Residential Area Project, both focused on better waste handling at the community level.

DBKU continues to push a simple message: recycling belongs in everyday routines. The programme supports the council’s plan to build a cleaner, healthier, and more responsible city.

Participation continues to grow, and the results show steady progress. The Smart Community 3R Stations now play a key role in shaping a sustainable future for Kuching North by promoting recycling, reducing waste, and encouraging community engagement in sustainability initiatives.
