DEBAK – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg has officially inaugurated the Debak Sub-District Mosque, marking a significant milestone for the local Muslim community.
During the ceremony, the premier announced that the mosque will carry the new name, Al-Azim Mosque.
The mosque project was undertaken by the Sarawak Islamic Council through the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department.
Construction began on 20 December 2023 and was completed on 25 November 2025, following adjustments to the implementation schedule.
Built on 2.98 acres of land, the mosque cost RM12 million, funded through the Sarawak Special Fund (SDAF) under the Premier’s allocation.
The completion of Al-Azim Mosque provides residents with a modern and comfortable centre for worship.
Beyond its religious role, the mosque is expected to serve as a hub for community activities, fostering unity and strengthening social bonds within the Debak Sub-District.
The Premier highlighted the importance of such facilities in supporting the spiritual and social development of the ummah.
The mosque’s design incorporates spacious prayer halls and facilities to accommodate a growing congregation.
Its establishment reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing religious infrastructure across Sarawak, ensuring that communities in both urban and rural areas have access to well-equipped places of worship.
Local residents welcomed the opening, noting that the mosque will not only provide a venue for daily prayers but also act as a centre for education, cultural programmes and community gatherings.
The Premier’s announcement of the new name, Al-Azim Mosque, symbolises strength and greatness, aligning with the mosque’s role as a cornerstone of faith and community life in Debak.
The inauguration of Al-Azim Mosque adds to Sarawak’s wider efforts to improve infrastructure and community facilities across the state.
With ongoing initiatives in water supply, electricity, housing and renewable energy, the government continues to balance physical development with cultural and spiritual growth.
