MUKAH – A senior government official has called for disaster preparedness to be ingrained as a fundamental aspect of national culture throughout Malaysia. This initiative aims to enhance the safety and welfare of all citizens by promoting proactive measures.
Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib, the Deputy Minister of Economy and MP for Mukah, stated that fostering this mindset is particularly critical for Sarawak. She cited the state’s difficult terrain and susceptibility to natural hazards as key reasons.
She articulated that readiness should be viewed not merely as a reactive measure during emergencies, but as a continuous cultural practice.
This is especially relevant in regions facing threats from floods, landslides, severe storms, and wildfires.
The deputy minister was speaking at a ceremony where the Sarawak Civil Defence Force (APM) presented ranks, medals, and ribbons to its personnel on Monday.
She specifically encouraged those in rural localities to engage actively with civil defence programmes.
She emphasised that community participation in APM activities enables faster response and more effective mitigation when disasters strike.
Having local members allows for immediate assistance to be administered before specialised rescue units can reach the scene, a vital factor for remote areas like Oya and Dalat.
Dato Hanifah also commended APM Sarawak for its essential role as a first responder, protecting the public and managing diverse emergencies across the state.
She praised the dedication, discipline, and efficiency of the personnel, noting these qualities remain commendable despite constraints in assets and equipment.
A total of 166 officers and members of the force received certificates of appointment, promotions, and awards in recognition of their exceptional service and commitment to public safety.
The honours distributed included the Warrior Medal (PPj), Defence Loyalty Medal (PSP), Service Award Medal (PAP), and the Defence Service Medal (PPP).
The event drew participants from APM contingents representing numerous divisions and districts across Sarawak.
Attendees came from locations including Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri, Sibu, and Betong, as well as from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
Also present at the ceremony were Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam, the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, and the Sarawak APM Director, Mohtar Samat.
