Drainage Issues in Plaie and Jegoi Villages Prompt Flood Mitigation Plans

KOTA SAMARAHAN – Authorities have taken initial steps to address recurring floods in Kampung Plaie and Kampung Jegoi, following a site inspection of the villages’ drainage and sewerage systems earlier this week.

The visit, held on Monday, was led by the Samarahan Division Resident’s Office with participation from Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang and Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) Special Administrative Officer Anuar Da’an.

The survey concentrated on identifying weaknesses in the drainage infrastructure, which has been cited as a major factor behind last week’s floods. Water flow failures were observed, causing overflow and stagnation in residential areas.

Officials explained that the findings from the inspection will serve as a foundation for developing more comprehensive flood mitigation measures.

Plans include upgrading drainage systems to reduce the risk of future flooding and to safeguard residents in both villages.

The site visit reflects growing concern over flood management in Samarahan, where heavy rainfall has repeatedly overwhelmed local infrastructure.

Residents have long voiced frustration over the recurring problem, which disrupts daily life and damages property.

The involvement of IRSDA highlights the importance of regional cooperation in tackling infrastructure challenges.

By combining resources and expertise, the agency and local authorities aim to implement practical solutions that will benefit affected communities.

Flooding remains a pressing issue across Sarawak, with drainage and sewerage systems often struggling to cope with rapid urbanisation and changing weather patterns.

The proactive measures taken in Plaie and Jegoi are expected to set the groundwork for wider improvements in flood-prone areas.

Authorities stressed that the inspection was only the first step, and further technical studies and community engagement will be required to ensure long-term resilience.

The commitment to improving drainage systems demonstrates a broader effort to protect vulnerable communities and enhance disaster preparedness in the region.
