KUCHING – The Dry Embroidery Art Programme: Dry Embroidery Class with Golden Threads, jointly organised by the Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (SABATI) and CENTEXS, concluded on 27 November at Wisma SABATI with the presence of YABhg. Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi.
The closing ceremony marked the second and final day of the programme, which aimed to preserve and promote the traditional art of keringkam embroidery, a cultural heritage unique to Sarawak.
Upon arrival, Toh Puan Fauziah was warmly received by YBhg. Dato Doreen Mayang Unggah, Deputy President cum Acting President of SABATI, alongside YBhg. Dato Enn Ong Siok Ean, YBhg. Dato Hajah Baduyah binti Haji Bujang, YBhg. Datin Hajah Siti Shorgayah binti Ahmad Zaidin, and other SABATI committee members.
At the start of the programme, Toh Puan Fauziah shared a collection of embroidered handkerchiefs belonging to His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar.
The pieces were displayed as a source of inspiration, allowing participants to appreciate the intricacies and craftsmanship of traditional keringkam art.
In her closing remarks, Toh Puan Fauziah presented souvenirs to the instructors as a gesture of appreciation for their dedication in teaching and preserving the embroidery tradition.
She also extended her gratitude to SABATI members for their efforts in ensuring the success of the programme.
She expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue to be organised, emphasising the importance of sustaining Sarawak’s cultural identity.
“Such programmes uphold the art of keringkam and strengthen the cultural identity of Sarawak, which is multi-racial and rich in artistic heritage and tradition,” she said.
The programme highlighted the role of SABATI and CENTEXS in promoting traditional arts while encouraging younger generations to value and carry forward Sarawak’s cultural legacy.
