Durian Season in Kuching: Best Spots to Satisfy Your Cravings

KUCHING (Dec 18): The much-anticipated durian season has finally arrived in Kuching, bringing with it the irresistible allure of the ‘King of Fruits.’ Durian lovers in the city are spoilt for choice as local sellers offer a variety of durian types, ranging from fresh ‘kampung’ (village) durians to the highly-prized ‘Musang King.’

For those in Kuching looking to get their hands on the best durians, here are three spots you should not miss:

  1. Taman Mimpi, Jalan Stapok
Located across from the KSC Store, Dilla Kilat, 27, and her uncle, Rezuan Milanau, 30, set up their humble stall, bringing in fresh durians daily from Simunjan. Their selection includes popular varieties like ‘Durian Kahwin’ (also known as ‘Durian Senah’) and ‘Durian Lusing.’ Prices are reasonable, with fruits costing between RM8 and RM10 each, and regular bunches of four to five fruits priced at RM40. For those looking for larger bunches, RM50 will get you a better deal. Their durians are freshly harvested every morning, making their stall a reliable stop for quality and freshness.
  2. Hui Sing Garden Roundabout
For more than 20 years, KW Chong has been offering durians at this popular spot, sourcing them from Serian. His stall features premium varieties like ‘Musang King’ and ‘D186’ (also known as ‘Durian IOI’). Prices for ‘Musang King’ are RM70 per kilogram, while the ‘IOI’ variety is priced at RM35 per kilogram. Chong warns that his durians often sell out quickly, so timing is key, though rainy days may slow sales. His stall remains open until the end of the season, giving durian enthusiasts plenty of time to indulge.
  3. Yung Yung Durian, Stutong Area
Located in front of the Public Bank branch, Yung Yung Durian is another great option for durian lovers in Kuching. Operating from 2 pm to 10 pm daily, they source their durians from Tebedu and Serian, offering ‘IOI’ and ‘Kampung’ varieties. For convenience, they even sell packed durian flesh, with two large boxes priced at RM60 or five smaller boxes for RM50. For those who prefer unopened durians, ‘IOI’ is RM30 per kilogram. Their exciting promotion on ‘Kampung Durian’ allows customers to fill a plastic bag with as many pieces as they can for RM60 or two bags for RM100.

With up to 1,000 durians transported daily from Tebedu, there’s no shortage of supply at Yung Yung Durian. Prices are expected to drop as more durians hit the market, balancing the supply and demand.

Durian enthusiasts, don’t wait too long! Head to these spots in Kuching and indulge in the season’s thorny treasures before they run out.
