MIRI (Aug 13) — In a dramatic early morning incident, a block of six-unit workers’ quarters at Tinbarap 2 estate in Bakong, Baram, was completely engulfed by flames today. The blaze, which erupted around 2:30 AM, has left the structure in ruins, but fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
According to a statement from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the emergency services were promptly alerted to the fire. Firefighters from the Marudi fire station were dispatched to the scene. However, due to the remote location of the oil palm estate, the journey for the emergency responders was expected to take over an hour.
Bomba reported that the fire affected only the block of six-unit workers’ quarters. In addition to the destruction of the residential units, a pickup truck parked nearby was also consumed by the flames. The intense blaze underscores the challenges faced by emergency services in reaching and containing fires in remote areas.
The block of quarters housed 11 individuals, including seven Malaysians and four Indonesians. Fortunately, all residents managed to escape the fire unharmed. The lack of casualties is a significant relief amidst the extensive property damage.
This incident highlights the need for enhanced fire safety measures in remote worker accommodations. Ensuring that fire alarms, sprinklers, and emergency exits are in place could help prevent similar disasters in the future.
In the wake of the fire, local community support and emergency services will play a crucial role in assisting the displaced workers. Temporary accommodations and relief aid will be essential in helping them recover from this unexpected disaster.
The fire serves as a reminder of the importance of robust fire safety protocols, especially in areas with limited access. Authorities and estate management should review and improve fire safety measures to protect workers and property.
Today’s early morning fire at Tinbarap 2 estate in Bakong, Baram, has resulted in significant property damage but thankfully no loss of life. As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the focus now shifts to supporting those affected and preventing future incidents.
