Elderly Man Missing in Boat Tragedy While Searching for Durians in Belaga

BELAGA, Dec 30 – A 60-year-old man, Micheal Sait Lanyau, is feared drowned after a tragic boat accident on Sungai Benatu, near Punan Bah, this morning. The incident occurred around 7.30 am when the victim’s boat capsized during his search for durians along the riverbanks.

Villagers who were nearby witnessed the boat capsizing from a distance but could not reach the scene in time to assist.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported receiving a distress call, prompting an immediate response. A rescue team from the Belaga Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), led by PB Vildeo Dumat, was dispatched to the scene. The journey to the accident site required approximately three hours due to the challenging terrain and river conditions.

Local villagers have joined the search efforts, scouring the riverbanks and waters for any sign of Micheal. Authorities confirmed that a police report has been lodged to coordinate further action.

“This is a tragic incident, and we are doing our best to assist in the search and rescue efforts,” a representative from Bomba stated.

The dense vegetation and unpredictable river currents have made the search operation more challenging. Authorities have urged villagers to exercise caution when navigating the river, especially during the rainy season when water levels can rise rapidly.

Micheal was well-known in the community for his love of durian hunting, an activity many locals engage in during the fruit’s peak season.

As the search continues, Micheal’s family and the Punan Bah community await updates with heavy hearts.
