Malaysia’s Ex-PM Dr Mahathir Hospitalised After Fall at Home

KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Tuesday morning (Jan. 6) following a fall at his residence.

The 100-year-old former PM was taken to the hospital by ambulance at around 9.30am. His press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, confirmed that Mahathir was conscious when admitted and is currently under medical observation.

“He had a fall early this morning, and normally that requires an observation in the hospital. He fell transiting from one part of the balcony to the living room, as I was made to understand,” Sufi explained in a message circulated through the official “Dr M Media Updates” WhatsApp group.

Medical specialists at IJN are conducting examinations to assess his condition, with further updates expected once results are available. A media officer from Mahathir’s office added that an official statement will be released soon.

This is not the first time the former leader has received treatment at IJN. On 13 July 2025, Mahathir was admitted due to fatigue after attending a picnic and cycling in Putrajaya. He was discharged later the same day.

Mahathir, who served as Malaysia’s fourth and seventh prime minister, remains one of the country’s most prominent political figures. His longevity and continued public presence have kept him in the spotlight even after retirement from active politics.

The incident has prompted concern among Malaysians, with former Education Minister Dr Radzi Jidin posting on Facebook to encourage prayers for Mahathir’s recovery. Public reactions on social media reflect both worry and well-wishes for the veteran leader.

Mahathir’s health has been closely monitored in recent years, given his advanced age. His resilience has often been noted, particularly after previous hospital visits where he recovered swiftly.

At present, no further details have been shared regarding the extent of injuries or the duration of his hospital stay. The IJN is expected to provide clarity once medical evaluations are complete.
