Excavator Fire in Kampung Tunah Quickly Extinguished by Villagers

MIRI – A fire incident involving an excavator at Kampung Tunah, Bekenu, last night was successfully brought under control by villagers before the arrival of firefighters.

The incident, which occurred at about 9.00pm, saw the heavy machinery almost 80 percent destroyed. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.

According to a spokesman from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), they received an emergency call at 9.05pm. In response, five personnel and a fire engine from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were immediately dispatched to the location.

“Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the fire had been successfully extinguished by members of the public using tap water from a nearby house,” the spokesman said in a statement.

The firefighters then conducted further cooling and inspection works to ensure no hidden flames or embers remained that could reignite the blaze.

The operation was officially declared over at 9.50pm. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the authorities.

Incidents like this highlight the quick action and cooperation of local communities in preventing further damage while waiting for the arrival of emergency teams. JBPM also reminded the public to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary risks when attempting to put out fires, especially involving heavy machinery or electrical sources.

Kampung Tunah residents expressed relief that the situation was contained quickly, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby areas.

Authorities are expected to carry out further assessments on the damaged excavator to determine the losses and identify possible causes of the fire.
