Motorcyclist Killed in Collision at KM17 Kota Samarahan–Asajaya Road

KUCHING, Nov 6: A 39-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a tragic road accident involving a car and a motorcycle at Kilometer 17 of Jalan Kota Samarahan–Asajaya yesterday evening.

Samarahan District Police Chief, Superintendent Damataries Lautin, confirmed the incident occurred around 7.22pm during heavy rain. The crash involved a Toyota Vios driven by a bank officer and a Honda EX5 motorcycle ridden by the victim from Kampung Asajaya Laut.

“Initial investigations revealed that the Toyota Vios, driven by a 39-year-old man, was heading from Sebuyau towards Kuching when the motorcycle suddenly entered its lane, leading to a collision on the right front side,” Supt Damataries said in a statement today.

The impact left the motorcyclist with severe injuries to his left thigh, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.45pm. His body was later sent to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for a post-mortem examination.

The car driver, who escaped unharmed, has since given his statement to the police. Both vehicles have been seized and taken to the Kota Samarahan Police Traffic Station for mechanical inspection as part of the investigation process.

Police have re-examined the accident scene to gather additional evidence, including road markings and weather conditions at the time of the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Supt Damataries reminded road users to exercise greater caution, especially during wet conditions, as slippery roads and low visibility often lead to fatal outcomes.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to maintain safe driving distances and remain vigilant at all times to avoid similar tragedies.
