BAU — A viral video showing a violent scuffle during the Chap Goh Mei parade in Bau Town has prompted swift action from the Royal Malaysian Police. The incident, which took place at the Bau bus station parking area, is now under investigation.
Bau District Police Chief P/SUPT. Mohd. Haide bin A. Rahman, in a press statement issued on Wednesday, confirmed that police received a report regarding the incident after a video of the fight was circulated widely on social media. The altercation reportedly occurred at about 9.30pm on March 3 during the Chap Goh Mei celebrations.
Initial investigations revealed that the incident involved three men who were engaged in a fight in a public area. Two local men, aged 20 and 23, later came forward to lodge separate police reports at the Bau District Police Headquarters, admitting their involvement in the altercation.
Police investigations found that the fight started from a misunderstanding that escalated into a verbal argument before turning into a physical confrontation. The situation, however, was brought under control quickly when friends stepped in to separate those involved. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported and both parties have since reconciled.
Despite the reconciliation, the police have opened an investigation paper under Section 160 of the Penal Code for affray, which relates to causing a disturbance in a public place. The case has been classified as completed in terms of suspect identification, but further investigations are ongoing to finalise the investigation paper before it is referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.
The Bau District Police Chief reminded the public to exercise self-control and maintain proper conduct when attending public events, especially during festive celebrations that attract large crowds. He stressed that the police will not compromise with any individual who disrupts public order or creates unnecessary tension during community gatherings.
