Finance Minister Highlights RM600m Heritage Conservation Under Budget 2026

KUALA LUMPURYB Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Minister of Finance II, visited Seri Negara today alongside members of the MADANI Government Supporters Club (Backbenchers) to review the restoration of one of Malaysia’s historic landmarks.

The visit included a briefing session aimed at providing a clearer understanding of the rationale, scope, and benefits of the conservation initiative.

Officials explained that the restoration of Seri Negara is part of a broader effort to revitalise heritage buildings and public spaces, ensuring they remain accessible and meaningful for future generations.

The initiative is supported by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, which has committed RM600 million under Budget 2026 to fund conservation works on major heritage assets across the country.

This investment reflects the government’s mandate to safeguard Malaysia’s cultural and historical identity while promoting sustainable use of public spaces.

Minister Amir Hamzah emphasised that heritage conservation is not only about preserving architecture but also about strengthening national identity and creating long-term value for the people.

He noted that restored heritage sites can serve as educational resources, tourist attractions, and community hubs, contributing to both cultural enrichment and economic growth.

The MADANI Government has consistently highlighted the importance of protecting strategic heritage assets.

By ensuring compliance with heritage standards and maintaining integrity in conservation practices, the administration aims to deliver projects that balance tradition with modern utility.

Observers point out that the RM600 million allocation represents one of the largest commitments to heritage conservation in recent years.

It signals a renewed focus on cultural preservation at a time when urban development often threatens historic sites.

The restoration of Seri Negara, once a residence for dignitaries, is seen as a symbolic step in reaffirming Malaysia’s dedication to its historical legacy.

The building’s revival is expected to inspire similar projects nationwide, reinforcing the role of heritage in shaping collective memory and national pride.

The briefing also underscored the government’s intention to involve communities in heritage initiatives, ensuring that conservation efforts resonate with the public.

Officials stressed that revitalised spaces should serve as inclusive venues for cultural activities, education, and civic engagement.

With Budget 2026 setting aside significant resources, Malaysia’s heritage conservation agenda is poised to expand, offering both cultural and economic dividends.

The government’s pledge to preserve historic assets reflects its broader vision of sustainable development under the MADANI framework.
