MATU – A roadside fire near the Matu-Igan Bridge was successfully contained on Wednesday following a coordinated operation involving multiple agencies.
The Matu District Civil Defence Force (APM) began preparations at 8.13 am and continued firefighting efforts until 6.59 pm. The operation was extended into the following day to ensure the situation was fully under control.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) led the firefighting efforts, supported by APM personnel and police officers. Together, the teams worked to extinguish the blaze and manage the risks posed by thick smoke drifting across the road.
Due to reduced visibility, APM members were tasked with traffic control to safeguard motorists travelling along the affected route. Officials confirmed that no casualties were reported, and all personnel involved remained safe throughout the operation.
In addition to tackling the flames, APM members assisted JBPM in extinguishing remaining embers to prevent the possibility of reignition. Security monitoring was also conducted around the operation area until the fire was fully contained.
Local authorities emphasised that the smooth coordination between agencies was key to the successful outcome. The incident highlighted the importance of joint response strategies in managing fire hazards, particularly in areas where road safety is directly impacted.
Residents in Matu expressed relief at the swift and organised response, noting that the presence of emergency teams provided reassurance during the prolonged operation. Officials reiterated their commitment to public safety, urging communities to remain vigilant and report fire outbreaks immediately.
The Civil Defence Force continues to operate under its guiding principle of readiness, speed, and integrity, ensuring that emergency situations are handled effectively.
