BINTULU, 21 April – A tragic early morning fire has left two individuals injured and a workers’ house completely destroyed in an incident that shook residents along Jalan Tanjung Kidurong today.

The fire, which was reported at approximately 4.42 am, involved a non-permanent structure measuring around 60 by 30 square feet. According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the victims—a 59-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy—suffered burn injuries on their hands and bodies.
Both individuals managed to escape the burning house before the arrival of emergency responders and were swiftly taken to the hospital by a Ministry of Health (MOH) ambulance for further medical attention.
A statement by JBPM’s Operations Centre (PGO) revealed that personnel from the Kidurong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), along with a water tanker from BBP Bintulu, were immediately dispatched to the scene, which was located about three kilometres away.
The firefighting team deployed a 200-foot-long hose with two nozzles and a mechanical pump to douse the flames. Due to the absence of a nearby fire hydrant, water had to be sourced from the BBP Bintulu water tanker.
“The operation concluded at 7.18 am,” said the fire department spokesperson. “The structure was completely destroyed. The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation.”
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of fire, especially in non-permanent worker housing which often lacks proper fire safety measures. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to report any signs of fire hazards in their communities.
