Fire Safety Training Held at Bintangor Ramadan Bazaar

BINTANGOR – A public awareness initiative focusing on fire safety was carried out at the Bintangor Ramadan Bazaar on Friday afternoon, organised by the Bintangor Fire and Rescue Station (BBP).

The programme, which began at 4.00 pm, was designed to educate visitors on essential safety practices during the busy Ramadan period. Officers from the station delivered talks on fire prevention, including guidance on the correct use of fire extinguishers and steps to take when dealing with kitchen fires.

A live demonstration was conducted to show how to extinguish a kitchen blaze effectively. Members of the public were invited to participate, giving them hands-on experience in using extinguishers and learning the proper techniques to control small fires. This practical approach aimed to ensure that bazaar-goers could respond confidently in the event of an emergency.

In addition to the safety activities, BBP personnel distributed pamphlets containing fire prevention tips. These materials highlighted common risks associated with cooking and food preparation, particularly in temporary stalls often set up during Ramadan bazaars. The distribution was intended to reinforce the importance of vigilance both at the bazaar and at home.

The event also carried a community spirit element. Station members prepared and shared peanut porridge with visitors, symbolising gratitude and togetherness during the holy month. This gesture was well received by the public, adding a cultural and social dimension to the safety campaign.

The programme was led by PPgB Mahmudin Narudin, Head of the Bintangor Fire and Rescue Station, alongside supervisors and station members. Their presence underscored the importance of community engagement in promoting safety awareness.

Public safety campaigns of this nature are increasingly common across Sarawak, particularly during festive seasons when large gatherings and food preparation activities heighten fire risks. Authorities have emphasised that such initiatives are not only about immediate safety but also about instilling long-term awareness among residents.

According to national fire safety guidelines, kitchen fires remain one of the most frequent causes of domestic incidents. The use of portable extinguishers and knowledge of basic fire response procedures can significantly reduce damage and prevent injuries. By integrating demonstrations with community outreach, BBP Bintangor aims to strengthen resilience and preparedness among the public.

The Ramadan bazaar, a popular attraction in Bintangor, draws large crowds daily. With stalls offering a wide variety of food, the risk of fire incidents is naturally higher. The awareness programme was therefore timely, ensuring that both stall operators and visitors are better informed about safety measures.

The organisers expressed hope that the initiative would encourage residents to adopt safer practices not only during Ramadan but throughout the year. By combining education, demonstration, and community bonding, the event highlighted the role of collective responsibility in safeguarding lives and property.
