Fishing Trip Turns Tragic in Kuala Baram: One Dead, One Injured

MIRI, 5 March 2025 – A peaceful fishing trip ended in tragedy today after a fishing boat capsized near Rumah Mekar Sungai Putat, Asam Paya, Kuala Baram, leaving one man dead and another seriously injured.

The incident happened this morning, and emergency teams from Lutong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) received the distress call at exactly 11.22 am. Rescuers rushed to the scene, but by the time they arrived, local villagers had already pulled both victims from the water and brought them back to the jetty.

The injured man, identified as Jeansher Bunsu, 27, suffered wounds to his head and arm, believed to have been caused by the boat blade during the accident. He was quickly sent to Miri Hospital for medical treatment.

Unfortunately, his fishing companion, Vincent Patrick, 58, was not so lucky. Medical officers at the scene confirmed his death. His body has since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

What Happened?

Initial investigations revealed that the two men were travelling upstream along the Baram River for a fishing trip. However, for reasons still unclear, the boat suddenly lost control and capsized. Both men were thrown into the river.

Residents from a nearby longhouse witnessed the incident and immediately rushed to help. Thanks to their quick action, the injured man could be rescued and brought back to safety, but sadly, Vincent Patrick could not be saved.

Reminder to All River Users

This tragic accident is a reminder to all river users, especially those travelling in small boats, to always wear life jackets and check boat conditions before heading out. Sudden accidents like this can happen without warning, especially during unpredictable weather or rough water conditions.

Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the capsizing to understand if it was due to engine failure, strong currents, or other factors.

The community around Rumah Mekar Sungai Putat has also expressed sadness and offered their condolences to the family of the deceased.
