Floating Body Found in Kuching Stream, Search Ends in Tragedy

Floating Body Found in Kuching Stream, Search Ends in Tragedy

KUCHING, Feb 22 — A search and rescue operation that gripped residents in parts of Kuching ended in sorrow on Sunday after a body was found floating about four kilometres from the location where a teenager was earlier reported to have fallen into a stream.

The body was discovered by authorities during ongoing operations along the waterway in Kampung Kolong, Sungai Tengah. The victim was later identified as a 17-year-old boy, the younger brother of Fahrell Zaquan, whose fall into the stream had been reported earlier and triggered an intensive search by multiple agencies.

The discovery brought an end to several days of coordinated efforts by the Fire and Rescue Department, police, and local volunteers who had been combing the area since the incident was first reported. The operation involved surface searches along the stream and surrounding riverbanks, with teams working against time and challenging conditions in the hope of a safe outcome.

According to initial information from the authorities, the body was located some distance from the original site, suggesting it had been carried downstream by the current. Upon recovery, standard procedures were carried out at the scene to secure the area and document the discovery before the remains were transported for further action.

The body was subsequently sent to Hospital Umum Sarawak for identification procedures and post-recovery processes. Officials confirmed that the identification was made with the assistance of the family, bringing painful closure to a case that had drawn widespread concern from the local community.

Residents in the area expressed deep sadness over the outcome, noting that the family is well known in the neighbourhood. Many had followed updates on the search closely and had hoped for a different ending. Messages of condolence and prayers began circulating on social media shortly after the news was confirmed.

Authorities reminded the public to remain cautious around streams and rivers, especially during periods of unpredictable weather and strong currents. They also thanked all personnel and volunteers involved in the operation for their dedication and cooperation throughout the search.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by waterways in residential areas and the emotional toll such events take on families and communities. In Kuching, where rivers and streams are part of daily life, the loss serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safety and vigilance.

May the soul of the deceased be blessed and placed among the faithful. Heartfelt condolences are extended to the family members and friends as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.
