KUCHING (Feb 5): The number of flood evacuees in Sarawak has decreased from 5,747 in the morning to 5,125 by 8pm today, according to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC). While many areas saw improved conditions, Mukah and Sibu recorded a rise in the number of displaced individuals.

In Mukah, evacuees increased from 443 in the morning to 501 by evening. Sibu also reported a slight rise, from 848 to 876 over the same period. The temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at SK Sungai Arip Selangau in Sibu had to be reopened after heavy rain caused renewed flooding. This PPS was previously closed on February 3.

Bintulu continues to be the most affected division, with 1,865 evacuees recorded, followed by Miri with 1,217 evacuees. Although there were reports of flooding in Lundu, no temporary evacuation centres have been activated in the district.

As of 8pm, a total of 30 PPS are still operational across Sarawak, while 51 have been closed. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, especially in areas experiencing continuous heavy rainfall.
