SELANGAU – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Selangau District has confirmed that floodwaters remain across several longhouse roads along the Batang River in Mukah, though water levels are gradually receding.
Monitoring was carried out on Monday morning, 12 January 2026, at 7.50 am, focusing on vulnerable stretches of the main road serving longhouse communities.
Officials reported that while the water level is showing signs of decline, most road connections remain submerged, cutting off access for vehicles.
The only route currently passable is the footpath leading to Rumah Bernadette Balan. Authorities stressed that despite the flooding, no residential structures have been damaged, and no evacuations have been deemed necessary.
Flooding along the Batang River has been a recurring challenge during the monsoon season, with low-lying areas particularly exposed to rising waters.
In recent weeks, several districts across Sarawak, including Sibu, Bintulu and Sebauh, have also reported temporary road closures and the activation of evacuation centres.
The Civil Defence Force highlighted that continuous monitoring is essential to ensure community safety. Teams remain stationed in affected areas to provide updates and respond to emergencies.
Residents have been urged to stay alert and follow official advisories, especially as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
Local disaster management committees have emphasised the importance of preparedness, noting that while the current situation in Selangau has not required evacuations, contingency plans are in place should conditions worsen.
The Civil Defence Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities under its guiding principle: “Ready, Fast, With Integrity.”
For urgent assistance, residents are advised to contact the 24-hour emergency hotline at 084-891285.
The situation along the Batang River continues to be closely monitored, with authorities assuring that updates will be provided regularly to keep the public informed.
