Authorities confirmed that floodwaters affecting nearby longhouses have fully receded, allowing residents to safely return to their homes.

The closure decision was finalised at 3.00 pm on Monday, 12 January 2026, after a site inspection determined that conditions had stabilised.

The PPS at SK Bukit Arip was among several centres activated across Sarawak in response to widespread flooding earlier this month.

According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, more than 3,000 individuals from nearly 1,000 families were displaced statewide, with 25 centres operating in districts including Serian, Siburan, Sibu, Selangau, Bintulu and Sebauh.

Flooding disrupted the start of the new school term, with 26 schools unable to open on schedule. The State Education Department reported that schools in Selangau, Daro and Tatau/Sebauh were among those affected.

Nineteen schools in Tatau/Sebauh bore the brunt of the closures, while others in Selangau temporarily served as evacuation centres.

Local officials highlighted that SK Bukit Arip played a crucial role in sheltering families during the peak of the floods.

The centre provided temporary accommodation, food supplies and medical assistance to evacuees. The Armed Forces, Civil Defence Force (APM), and other agencies coordinated relief efforts to ensure safety and welfare.

Residents expressed relief at being able to return home, though many remain cautious about the risk of further flooding.

January’s heavy rainfall has been linked to seasonal monsoon conditions, which frequently affect low-lying areas in Sarawak.

JPBD Selangau reminded the public that emergency assistance remains available around the clock. The Civil Defence Force has urged residents to contact its hotline at 084-891285 for immediate support in the event of renewed flooding or other disasters.

The closure of SK Bukit Arip PPS marks a positive step towards recovery in Selangau, but authorities continue to monitor weather forecasts closely.

With flood risks persisting in several districts, disaster management teams remain on standby to reopen centres if necessary.
