Flood Victims Sheltered at Bukit Assek PPS in Sibu

SIBU – The Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at Dewan Mutiara Ilmu, SMK Bukit Assek remains open as of Monday, 12 January 2026, providing shelter to six flood victims from one household.

The PPS was activated in the early hours of Sunday, 11 January, at 2:30 AM, following heavy rainfall that caused water levels to rise in parts of Sibu. Since its opening, the centre has continued to support affected residents with food, shelter, and basic necessities.

According to the Civil Defence Force (APM Sibu), the situation at the location is under control, with no new evacuees reported as of 8:08 AM on Monday. Relief distribution was carried out shortly after, with the Social Welfare Department (JKM) providing meals to both victims and personnel stationed at the centre.

The PPS at Bukit Assek is one of several centres activated across Sarawak in response to ongoing floods. Statewide, thousands of residents have been displaced, with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reporting that more than 3,000 evacuees remain in temporary shelters.

In Sibu, the Dewan Mutiara Ilmu PPS has been crucial in ensuring that affected families are not left without support. Local authorities have emphasised that updates will continue to be shared as the situation develops, ensuring transparency and timely information for the public.

Flooding in Sarawak has been particularly challenging during the current monsoon season, with divisions such as Serian, Bintulu, and Miri also reporting significant numbers of evacuees. The state government has urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and to heed warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.

APM Sibu reiterated its readiness to respond to emergencies, reminding the public of its motto, “Nang Steady”, and encouraging residents to contact the agency immediately in the event of a disaster.

The PPS at Bukit Assek continues to serve as a safe haven for those affected, while authorities monitor weather conditions closely to determine whether additional centres may need to be activated.
