KUCHING – A proud moment for Sarawak’s food scene unfolded recently as members of Persatuan Peminat Gourmet Kuching embarked on a cultural and culinary mission to Linyi, China, where they introduced some of Kuching’s most beloved traditional dishes to an international audience.

The group was specially invited to participate in a food-focused event aimed at celebrating cross-cultural friendship through cuisine. More than just a showcase of flavours, the visit symbolised the growing importance of grassroots culinary advocates in promoting Sarawak’s unique food identity on the global stage.
According to representatives from the association, the visit was not merely about serving dishes — it was about sharing stories, building goodwill, and strengthening bonds between communities through food. The trip was hailed as a milestone for everyday food lovers, street vendors, and passionate home cooks who have long played a vital role in preserving traditional recipes.
“This is only the beginning,” a spokesperson from the group said. “We are looking forward to future trips across different parts of the world to continue our mission of promoting Sarawak’s cuisine and culture.”
There is also a growing call for tourism authorities in Sarawak to consider involving more grassroots groups in official cultural and food missions abroad. “It shouldn’t only be celebrity chefs or award winners representing us,” the spokesperson added. “Our kampung cooks, night market vendors, and food lovers carry the real heart of our culture.”
The group extended heartfelt thanks to Valentine Leslie, an international gourmet award recipient, who played a key role in making the trip possible. His ongoing support has been instrumental in opening doors for local culinary enthusiasts who often go unrecognised in mainstream platforms.
“His recognition is not just about personal accolades,” said a member. “It’s a light for all of us who love our local dishes and want the world to taste them.”
With the success of the Linyi event, the group now sets its sights on future opportunities — with the same mission in mind: to carry the taste and soul of Sarawak cuisine to international tables.
