BAU – Police in Bau have detained a foreign national following an incident in Kampung Opar, within the SALCRA area, on 4 April 2026.
The suspect, believed to be around 30 years old, was reported to have been wandering in a drunken state and behaving aggressively, which alarmed local residents. Villagers intervened to restrain the man before contacting the authorities.
Upon arrival, officers from the Bau District Police Headquarters confirmed that the individual claimed to be an Indonesian citizen but was unable to produce valid travel documents.
He was subsequently arrested under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which covers offences relating to entry and presence without proper authorisation.
The suspect sustained minor facial injuries during the struggle with members of the public and was taken to Bau Hospital for medical treatment. Police stated that the injuries were not serious and that the suspect is receiving appropriate care.
Investigators are now working to verify the suspect’s nationality and immigration status. The Bau District Police have indicated that the Malaysian Immigration Department will be consulted to confirm details and ensure proper legal procedures are followed. Relevant authorities will also be notified as part of the ongoing investigation.
District Police Chief PISUPT. Mohd. Haide bin A. Rahman emphasised that while community vigilance is important, members of the public should avoid taking matters into their own hands in situations that could endanger their safety.
He urged residents to immediately report suspicious behaviour or incidents to the police rather than attempting direct intervention.
The Bau District Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety and order, stressing that enforcement against immigration offences remains a priority in border areas such as Bau.
The arrest highlights the challenges faced by communities near international boundaries, where cross-border movement requires careful monitoring.
Authorities continue to encourage cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies to ensure that incidents are handled swiftly and safely.
Police operations in Bau will remain focused on protecting residents, upholding the law, and preventing potential risks to community security.
