Global Sumud Flotilla Nears Gaza, Now on High Alert Amid Drone Threats

KUCHING — The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) mission vessels are now on full alert as they draw closer to Gaza, following reports of increased drone activity over their sailing route in the Mediterranean Sea.

In a statement on social media, Sumud Nusantara highlighted the growing risks faced by participants of the humanitarian mission, warning that the flotilla had entered what it described as a “high-risk zone.”

“The flotilla vessels have now sailed into an area where previous humanitarian missions were either intercepted or attacked. Several early reports also point to the possibility of different scenarios unfolding in the coming hours,” it said.

The GSF, in a separate Instagram post, confirmed its vessels are less than 145 nautical miles from Gaza. “As we sail closer, we remain vigilant, as this is the same zone where flotillas before us were stopped or targeted. Keep your eyes on the mission. Keep your eyes on Gaza. We sail on, undeterred by Israeli threats and intimidation tactics,” the statement read.

The Global Sumud Flotilla carries food, medicine, and symbolic messages of peace, with a strong call for the opening of a humanitarian corridor into Gaza. The initiative seeks to highlight the suffering caused by war and famine while pressing for international action to lift the blockade on the enclave.

Among those on board are 34 Malaysians, who are sailing alongside activists from 45 different countries. Despite looming threats, including drone activity, the participants remain steadfast in their mission, emphasising that their journey is a peaceful act of solidarity with the people of Gaza.
