LUBOK ANTU – Two significant initiatives in Sarawak’s interior have marked important milestones this week, reflecting the state’s dual commitment to environmental sustainability and infrastructure development.
In Lubok Antu, the Go Green (GG) Heroes MDLA 2025 programme concluded with a closing ceremony officiated by Special Administrative Officer Jack Meredan, representing Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment of Sarawak and Batang Ai Assemblyman Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh.
The programme, designed to foster environmental conservation awareness among students, communities, and stakeholders, aligns with Sarawak’s broader sustainable development agenda.
Key highlights included the handover of fruit trees by Sarawak Energy Berhad, the donation of fire extinguishers by Jasa Semanju Enterprise, and the presentation of certificates and souvenirs to facilitators, teachers, and honoured guests.
Demonstrating commitment to rural outreach, the delegation travelled to Nanga Spaya using off-road vehicles and boats. During the event, Jack announced allocations of RM30,000 under the Rural Minor Project (MRP) for the MDLA Community Development and Tourism Committee, and RM10,000 for the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of SK Nanga Tibu, Engkari.
Meanwhile, in Engkilili, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a major infrastructure project: the construction of a 9-kilometre road from Merebong to Engkilili Town via Bukit Tungku and Klampo. The project, valued at RM34,666,275.67, is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The ceremony was officiated by Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, who underscored the importance of improving connectivity in rural Sarawak.
The road is expected to ease transportation, enhance economic activity, and improve access to essential services for communities in the interior.
The event was attended by Mikai Mandau, Political Secretary to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Jampi Tutong, TEKUN Malaysia Board of Directors Member, as well as community leaders Penghulu Lepang Garang and Penghulu Temeling Jua.
Together, the closing of the Go Green Heroes programme and the launch of the Engkilili road project highlight Sarawak’s balanced approach to development, investing in both environmental sustainability and infrastructure growth to uplift rural communities.
