KUCHING – A poster competition celebrating the bond between children and their grandparents was held in Kuching South, drawing heartfelt tributes from young participants and highlighting the importance of family values in the community.
The event, themed “My Grandparents, My Heart, My Hero”, was organised under the Kuching South City Council’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and Ageing Action Plan.
The programme aims to strengthen intergenerational ties while promoting inclusivity for both the young and elderly in the city.
Children from local schools submitted creative posters that depicted family moments, affection, and respect for grandparents.
The artworks conveyed messages of love and gratitude, portraying grandparents as everyday heroes who provide guidance, comfort, and unconditional support.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who officiated the competition, praised the participants for their sincerity and creativity. He emphasised that grandparents play a vital role in nurturing family bonds and passing down wisdom.
“One day, your grandparents may walk slower, and their hands may shake. But their love for you will never grow old,” he said, encouraging children to cherish time spent with their elders.
The competition also served as a reminder of the council’s broader vision to create a caring and inclusive city.
Through initiatives such as the Ageing Action Plan, MBKS is working to ensure that senior citizens are valued and supported, while young people are given opportunities to express themselves and learn about empathy and respect.
Parents, teachers, and organisers were acknowledged for their contributions in making the event a success.
The mayor extended his gratitude to all involved, noting that the collaboration between schools and the council reflects the community’s commitment to fostering harmony and kindness.
Winners of the competition were announced at the ceremony, with participants receiving recognition for their efforts.
The event concluded with a call to continue building a city that measures its strength not only by development but also by how it treats its children and elderly.
The poster competition is part of a series of community-focused programmes in Kuching South aimed at promoting civic pride, family unity, and social responsibility.
By encouraging children to express their appreciation for grandparents, the initiative reinforces the values of love, respect, and compassion that underpin a resilient society.
