KUCHING, Jan 5 — Hui Sing Hawker Centre marked an important milestone on Sunday as the Kuching Samarahan Hawkers and Traders Association celebrated its 32nd anniversary with its 13th annual charity food aid programme, bringing help, warmth and unity to the local community.
The meaningful event was held at Hui Sing Hawker Centre and reflected the long-standing values of compassion, togetherness and social responsibility that have defined the association for more than three decades. Over the years, the hawker centre has grown from its early days as part of the Satok street food scene into a popular late afternoon and early evening food destination, serving generations of Kuching residents.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South City Council mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and Kota Sentosa assemblyman YB Wilfred Yap, Pemanca Tan Kun Gee were present to witness the charity initiative, lending their support to an event that highlighted the strength of community-led efforts.
The anniversary celebration was made more meaningful through the distribution of 500 food basket sets, each containing rice and essential food items, to needy families and non-governmental organisations. More than 500 families benefited directly from the programme, easing their daily burdens and reminding them that they are not forgotten.
The success of the charity drive was largely due to the strong support from its main sponsors, 38 Food Street and 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta. Their continued commitment to community welfare and social responsibility played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth organisation of the event and the timely delivery of aid to those who needed it most.
Many attendees described the event as a reflection of Sarawak’s spirit, where people from different backgrounds come together with genuine care and goodwill. For long-time patrons and hawkers, Hui Sing Hawker Centre is more than just a place to eat. It is a shared space filled with memories, traditions and stories passed down across generations, from traders to customers.
As the association celebrates 32 years of service, the charity programme stands as a reminder that hawkers and traders are not only contributors to the local economy but also key pillars of the community. Through consistent efforts like this annual food aid initiative, Hui Sing Hawker Centre continues to uphold its legacy of relevance, compassion and unity.
With strong support from sponsors, leaders and the public, the Kuching Samarahan Hawkers and Traders Association hopes to continue serving the community for many years to come, staying true to the values that have guided it since the beginning.
