The structure, built by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), is intended solely for construction purposes and will not be accessible to the public.

The Bailey bridge has been designed to facilitate the movement of heavy machinery and the delivery of materials to the project site.

By providing reliable access, it ensures that work on the permanent bridge can proceed more smoothly and efficiently.

Officials confirmed that the temporary bridge is almost complete, with the overall physical progress of the main project currently recorded at 1.60 per cent.

Once the Bailey bridge is fully operational, construction of the permanent 125-metre bridge across the Katibas River will be accelerated.

The permanent structure is expected to deliver significant long-term benefits to the local community, including improved connectivity, safer travel routes, and enhanced socio-economic opportunities for residents in Song District and the wider Kapit Division.

The Katibas River crossing has long been identified as a priority for infrastructure development in the region.

The project reflects Sarawak’s broader agenda of strengthening rural infrastructure to promote balanced development across the state.

By investing in connectivity projects such as the Hulu Katibas Bridge, the government aims to reduce isolation in remote areas and stimulate economic growth.

Temporary Bailey bridges are commonly used in major construction projects as interim solutions, allowing work to progress without delay.

Their modular design makes them quick to assemble and reliable for heavy-duty use. In this case, the bridge is serving as a vital logistical link, ensuring that the permanent structure can be built safely and efficiently.

Local residents have expressed optimism about the project, noting that the permanent bridge will not only improve transport but also encourage greater social and economic integration.

The development is expected to support agriculture, trade, and access to essential services, contributing to the overall welfare of the community.

With the Bailey bridge nearing completion, attention will soon shift to the main construction phase of the Hulu Katibas Bridge.

Once finished, the project will stand as a symbol of Sarawak’s commitment to modernising infrastructure and delivering tangible benefits to its people.
