KUCHING – Sarawak’s education sector has reached another milestone with the elevation of i-CATS University College to full university status, following approval from the Ministry of Higher Education.

The announcement was made by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the Sarawak Career and Training Fair (SCaT Fair) 2026 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre.

The Premier explained that the recognition marks a significant step in strengthening Sarawak’s human capital development.

He noted that the state now has two government-owned universities: Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu and the newly upgraded i-CATS University in Kuching.

“The Sarawak Government has received a decision from the Ministry of Higher Education where the Federal Government has decided to upgrade i-CATS, which has met the requirements as a full university,” he said.

Abang Johari highlighted that i-CATS will play a crucial role in producing a highly skilled workforce, particularly in technology-related fields that underpin Sarawak’s future economy.

He emphasised that the institution has already established an aerospace faculty, staffed with its own teaching team, and has begun offering aerospace courses this year.

The faculty is collaborating with Istanbul Technical University, as well as local institutions such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), to strengthen its academic offerings.

The Premier added that the university’s expansion into aerospace reflects Sarawak’s ambition to diversify its economy and prepare for industries that demand advanced technical expertise.

He stressed that the development of such programmes will ensure Sarawak remains competitive in emerging sectors.

Looking ahead, the Sarawak government has outlined plans to construct a new i-CATS campus in Trombol, with an estimated cost of RM400 million.

The project will be carried out in phases and will include modern academic facilities and student accommodation.

Abang Johari explained that the new campus will provide a more conducive environment for learning and research, supporting the university’s growth and meeting the state’s future workforce needs.

The Premier reiterated that the transformation of i-CATS into a full university is not only a recognition of its academic progress but also a strategic investment in Sarawak’s long-term development.

He said the move would enhance opportunities for local students, reduce reliance on institutions outside the state, and contribute to the overall strengthening of Sarawak’s higher education landscape.

With this upgrade, i-CATS joins UTS as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s education system, reflecting the state’s commitment to nurturing talent and advancing knowledge in line with its economic aspirations.
