KUCHING – The Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division carried out Operation Mahir on 30 October 2025, targeting illegal immigrants at two construction sites across the city. The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing effort to curb the presence of foreign nationals working or residing in Malaysia without valid permits.
During the operation, immigration officers inspected 171 individuals, leading to the arrest of 80 foreign nationals for offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63. Most of those detained were suspected of overstaying their visas or working without proper employment documents. The operation also highlighted the issue of illegal residency, with several individuals found living in conditions not authorised by law.
In conjunction with the arrests, authorities also summoned three employers to the Kuching Immigration Office. The employers are being investigated for their potential role in hiring and accommodating illegal workers at the construction sites. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of their involvement and any further legal actions required.
The Sarawak Malaysian Immigration Department reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing immigration laws strictly and taking action against all parties found in violation. The department also encouraged members of the public to report information related to illegal immigrants via official channels, emphasising community cooperation to ensure the safety and well-being of the state.
Operation Mahir represents the government’s continued efforts to maintain law and order, particularly concerning immigration compliance. Authorities have indicated that similar operations will continue in other parts of Sarawak to prevent the proliferation of illegal immigrants and safeguard local employment opportunities.
The department reminded employers that hiring undocumented workers carries serious legal consequences, and any form of complicity would not be tolerated. Public vigilance, combined with regular enforcement actions, is seen as crucial in combating illegal employment practices and maintaining national security.
