Increase Flood Aid for Sarawak: Dr Yii Calls RM25 Million Insufficient

KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has called on the federal government to allocate more funds to Sarawak and Sabah to address the massive damage caused by recent floods.

While welcoming Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of RM25 million in immediate aid for both states, Dr Yii stressed that the allocation is inadequate given the extent of damage. He highlighted that some flood victims reported personal losses exceeding RM50,000 per household.

“For comparison, in December 2024, the federal government allocated RM50 million—RM25 million each to Kedah and Terengganu. Based on that precedent, I urge the government to revise and increase the allocation for Sarawak and Sabah to at least RM50 million,” Dr Yii said in a statement.

He emphasized the need for an efficient and transparent distribution process to ensure flood victims receive timely assistance without unnecessary bureaucratic delays.

“Some policies, such as requiring victims to relocate to temporary relief centres (PPS), can disqualify those who remain in their homes due to fears of burglary. This policy must be revised to ensure aid reaches all affected individuals,” he added.

Dr Yii also stressed that the recent floods underline the need for improved flood management in Sarawak. He called for the Kuching Flood Mitigation Plan (PLSB) Project to be expedited without further delays.

“The delayed implementation of the Kuching Flood Mitigation Plan must be prioritized. Any further delay will only increase our vulnerability. Accelerated action is crucial to safeguard the people and prevent future disasters,” he said.

In his appeal, Dr Yii reiterated that proactive measures and better infrastructure planning are vital to protect the community and reduce the risk of recurring flood damage.
