TEBEDU – The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) Sarawak, in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) Kuching, successfully carried out the Foreign Detainee Return Programme on Thursday, 7 May 2026.
The initiative was led by YBrs TPPI Puan Shareena Binti Mohamad Shuib at the Semuja Immigration Depot.
The programme involved the repatriation of 282 Indonesian nationals who had completed their sentences in Malaysia. The group comprised 220 men, 49 women, nine boys, and four girls.
Their transfer was conducted under strict supervision to ensure safety and smooth coordination throughout the process.
This initiative forms part of JIM’s ongoing commitment to managing foreign detainees in a structured and lawful manner.
By working closely with foreign embassies and consulates, JIM ensures that repatriation procedures are carried out professionally and in compliance with established regulations.
Officials highlighted that the programme reflects Malaysia’s concern in addressing migration issues responsibly.
It also demonstrates the government’s efforts to balance enforcement with humanitarian considerations, ensuring that detainees are returned to their home countries with dignity and order.
The collaboration between JIM Sarawak and KJRI Kuching underscores the importance of bilateral cooperation in managing cross-border migration.
Such partnerships are essential in maintaining regional stability and ensuring that processes involving foreign nationals are handled transparently and effectively.
Observers note that the repatriation of detainees is not only a legal requirement but also a measure that helps reduce overcrowding in detention facilities.
It further strengthens Malaysia’s reputation for adhering to international standards in migration management.
The Foreign Detainee Return Programme is expected to continue as part of JIM’s broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency, uphold legal compliance, and foster stronger ties with neighbouring countries.
