MIRI – Police in Miri have detained a local man in connection with the theft of a shoulder bag reported earlier this week. The incident, which occurred at the Son Soon Enterprise Office in Padang Kerbau, involved the loss of personal belongings and important documents.
The complainant lodged a report at the Miri Central Police Station on 19 May, prompting swift action from law enforcement. Following intelligence gathered, officers moved to apprehend the suspect later that evening.
The arrest was carried out at approximately 11.30 pm in Kampung Bungai, Bekenu. The operation was led by Inspector Mohd Aimi Bin Abd Latiff of the Criminal Investigation Department, supported by personnel from the Miri IPD and the CPJ unit of the Miri Central Police Station.
During the operation, police recovered an iPhone 15 Pro Max believed to have been taken during the theft. The device has been seized as evidence to aid further investigation. The suspect is currently being held at the Miri Central Police Station lockup.
Authorities confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which covers theft in dwelling houses or buildings. Convictions under this section can carry significant penalties, including imprisonment.
Police have emphasised the importance of public vigilance in preventing similar incidents. They advise residents to remain cautious with their belongings, particularly in public or commercial areas, and to report suspicious activity promptly.
Cases of theft and property crime remain a concern in urban centres such as Miri, where police continue to conduct targeted operations to deter criminal activity.
The latest arrest highlights the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to safeguard communities and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
Authorities also encourage members of the public to channel information related to crime directly to the police. Community cooperation, they stress, plays a vital role in maintaining safety and supporting investigations.
This case adds to a series of recent enforcement actions across Sarawak, where police have stepped up patrols and investigations to address rising concerns over theft, drug offences, and other criminal activities.
The Miri arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated policing efforts and reinforces the message that crime will not be tolerated.
