Tehran/Tel Aviv – Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated dramatically following a major Israeli air operation earlier this week. In response, Iran has launched waves of ballistic missiles and drones targeting multiple cities in Israel, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing regional conflict.
Israeli Airstrikes on Iran
On Thursday, Israel conducted an extensive aerial offensive dubbed “Operation Rising Lion”, involving over 200 fighter jets striking nearly 100 targets within Iranian territory. The strikes reportedly hit sites linked to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, Revolutionary Guard facilities, and key military installations near Natanz and Tehran. Iran’s health authorities stated that the attacks killed at least 78 people and injured more than 320 others.
Iranian Retaliation
In retaliation, Iran launched dozens of ballistic missiles and over 100 drones directed at major Israeli population centres, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Israeli air defence systems, supported by United States forces, intercepted the majority of the incoming threats. However, several projectiles managed to reach populated areas.
At least three people were confirmed killed in Israel, including a couple in Rishon LeZion. Dozens more were injured, and several residential buildings and public infrastructure sustained damage.
International Response
The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session to address the situation, amid growing fears of a broader regional war. The United States reiterated its support for Israel’s right to defend itself but urged both sides to avoid further escalation. Russia and China condemned Israel’s initial strikes, while several European leaders expressed concern over the spiralling conflict.
Diplomatic Fallout
The Iranian government has stated that further participation in international nuclear talks is in jeopardy unless Israeli attacks cease immediately. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the Israeli strikes “a grave provocation” and warned of more “painful retaliation” if hostilities continue.
Air travel across the region faced disruptions, with neighbouring countries temporarily closing their airspace due to security concerns.
