SIMUNJAN – The Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) successfully convened a major gathering for the “Saudara Kita” (Our Brothers) community at Dewan Mesra in Simunjan on 25 July 2026. The event, known as the Ijtimak Saudara Kita Programme for the year 1448H/2026M, brought together 450 participants from four key divisions across the state.
Attendees travelled from Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, and Sri Aman to participate in the programme, which was organised by the Development Division of Our Brothers under JAIS. The large turnout reflected the growing importance of support networks for new converts and the department’s commitment to fostering a cohesive Muslim community.
The ceremony was officiated by Sahibus Siyadah Tuan Haji Mual bin Haji Suaud, the Director of JAIS. His presence underscored the high priority placed by the state religious authority on the welfare and integration of converts. The director’s engagement with the participants highlighted the administrative support available to ensure their spiritual and social well-being.
The programme commenced with an informative presentation on the Secretariat of Our Brothers (USK). Ustazah Rasyidah binti Abdullah, Head of the Development Unit of Our Brothers, outlined the structure and functions of the secretariat. Her briefing provided clarity on how the organisation operates to support its members, ensuring that participants understood the resources available to them.
A central feature of the event was a forum themed “Our Brothers: Guided by Wisdom, Led by Love”. Moderated by Ustaz AlSagap bin Beli, an Islamic Affairs Officer at JAIS, the session featured three distinguished panelists. The panel included Ustaz Mohd Amir Ridhwan bin Abdullah from JAIS, along with Ustaz Yakub bin Abdullah and Ustaz Mohd Chathazman bin Abdullah, both executives from the Sarawak Islamic Council.
The panelists shared insights on navigating life as a convert, emphasising the balance between religious knowledge and emotional support. Their discussions aimed to equip participants with the wisdom needed to face challenges while fostering a sense of belonging within the wider ummah. The interactive nature of the forum allowed for meaningful exchange of ideas and experiences.
Adding a spiritual dimension to the proceedings, Sister Ngatina binti Kaliwon, a local participant from Simunjan, recited verses from the Holy Quran. Her recitation served as a reminder of the shared faith that binds the community together, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere within the hall.
A significant moment during the event was the presentation of the newly approved Certificates of Appointment for the Saudara Kita Secretariat (USK). This formal recognition empowered the supporting organisational structure, validating the roles of those tasked with managing community affairs. It signalled a move towards greater professionalism and accountability within the volunteer network.
In his closing address, Tuan Haji Mual bin Haji Suaud outlined three strategic focuses for the future development of the Saudara Kita community. First, he stressed the importance of strengthening bonds of friendship among participants. He argued that strong interpersonal connections are vital for mutual support and resilience.
Secondly, the director highlighted the need for continuous reinforcement of Islamic understanding. He encouraged participants to seek knowledge diligently, ensuring that their practice of the faith is grounded in correct teachings. This educational focus is intended to build confidence and clarity in their religious identity.
Finally, he emphasised the necessity of supporting the welfare of converts through a wise and compassionate approach. He called for sustained efforts to address the social and economic needs of new Muslims, ensuring they do not feel isolated or neglected. This holistic support system is crucial for long-term retention and satisfaction within the community.
The event concluded smoothly, achieving its primary objectives of education, networking, and empowerment. Feedback from attendees indicated a high level of satisfaction with the content and organisation of the programme. Many expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect with peers from different divisions.
Organisers hope that the insights gained during the Ijtimak will have a lasting impact on the participants. By strengthening their beliefs and personalities, the programme aims to produce individuals who are not only devout but also active contributors to society.
