KUCHING – The Sarawak Department of Social Welfare (JKM) has initiated a strategic collaboration with the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) to develop skills training programmes aimed at empowering welfare micro-entrepreneurs (UMK), children of clients, and former residents of welfare institutions.
The discussion session, held on 13 April 2026, focused on designing training modules in technical and vocational fields that align with current industry needs.
The initiative seeks to enhance employability, improve marketability, and provide sustainable income opportunities for the target groups.
Officials highlighted that the collaboration will open pathways for children of welfare clients and former residents to access quality training and structured career development.
This effort is expected to help participants achieve independence and break free from cycles of poverty.
JKM Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with training agencies such as CENTEXS, recognising that inclusive empowerment initiatives are vital to supporting the state’s socio-economic development.
By equipping vulnerable groups with practical skills, the programme aims to foster resilience and long-term self-reliance.
The skills training framework will also support Sarawak’s broader agenda of building a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of modern industries.
With CENTEXS providing technical expertise and JKM ensuring community outreach, the collaboration is positioned to deliver impactful results.
Organisers expressed optimism that the initiative will not only improve employment opportunities but also contribute to social stability by empowering individuals to actively participate in the economy.
